Terms of service

Effective Oct 14, 2026

The agreement between you and CageCard when you use it. Plain-language summary: your lab's data is yours, pay for the plan you use, use CageCard for real lab work, and you stay responsible for your animal care and compliance.

1. Who this agreement is with

These terms are an agreement between you and Collin McMahon, doing business as CageCard ("CageCard", "we", "us"). By creating an account or using CageCard, you agree to them and to the privacy policy. If you use CageCard for a lab, institution or company, you confirm that you're allowed to accept these terms for it, and "you" includes it.

2. Your account

  • Give accurate details, and keep your password and sign-in links to yourself.
  • You're responsible for what happens in your account. Workspace owners and managers are responsible for who they invite and the roles they give.
  • Tell us at support@cagecard.app if you think someone else has used your account.
  • You must be at least 16.

3. Trials, plans and payment

  • New workspaces get a free trial (30 days unless we say otherwise). No card is needed. When it ends, the workspace becomes read-only until someone subscribes: nothing is deleted.
  • Plans and prices are on the pricing page. Subscriptions are billed in advance, monthly or yearly, through Stripe, and renew automatically until cancelled. Lab plans are billed for the managers and workers in the workspace; viewers are free.
  • You can cancel any time. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep access until the end of the period you've paid for. We don't refund partial periods, except where the law requires it.
  • We may change prices. We'll tell you at least 30 days before a change applies to your subscription, and it takes effect at your next renewal.
  • Prices don't include taxes, which are added where required.

4. Your data

  • The records you and your lab put into CageCard are yours (or your lab's or institution's). We don't claim any ownership of them.
  • You give us permission to store, copy, process and display them only as needed to run CageCard for you, as described in the privacy policy.
  • You can ask for a copy of your workspace's records at any time, including after cancelling. Within 90 days of a workspace closing, we can still return them; after that, we may delete them.
  • You're responsible for having the right to put the data in (for example, your institution's permission), and for keeping your own copies of anything you can't afford to lose.

5. Animal research and compliance

CageCard is a tool for keeping colony records. It helps you track animals, breeding, genotypes, health and tasks, but it doesn't replace your judgment, your veterinarians or your institution's animal care program. In particular:

  • You remain responsible for complying with your approved protocols, your IACUC (or equivalent), and the laws and regulations on animal research that apply to you.
  • Reminders, flags and calculations (wean dates, breeding alerts, expected genotypes, health warnings) are aids, not guarantees. Check anything that matters for an animal's welfare.
  • Unless your institution has agreed otherwise with us in writing, CageCard isn't your official record for regulatory purposes.

6. Acceptable use

Don't use CageCard to:

  • break the law, or store data you don't have the right to store;
  • store sensitive personal data it isn't designed for, such as patients' health information: it's built for animal records;
  • try to get into other people's workspaces or accounts, test our security without permission, or overload the service;
  • copy, resell or reverse-engineer CageCard, or use it to build a competing product;
  • send spam through invitations or notifications.

We may suspend accounts that do, after telling you where we can.

7. Availability and changes

  • We work to keep CageCard available, but we don't promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and Individual and Lab plans have no uptime guarantee. You can check its status on the status page.
  • Offline editing keeps changes on your device until it reconnects. Changes that haven't synced are lost if the device's browser data is cleared, or if you sign out, before then.
  • We improve CageCard all the time and may change or remove features. If we remove something you rely on, we'll give notice where we reasonably can.

8. Ending the agreement

  • You can stop using CageCard and close your account at any time.
  • We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, or doesn't pay. Except in urgent cases (security, the law), we'll tell you first and give you time to fix it or get your data.
  • If we ever shut CageCard down, we'll give at least 60 days' notice and a way to export your data.

9. Disclaimers

CageCard is provided "as is" and "as available". As far as the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.

10. Limit of liability

As far as the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for lost profits, research results or data, however caused. Our total liability for any claims about CageCard is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim (or $100 if you've paid nothing). Nothing here limits liability that can't be limited by law.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The new version will be posted here with its effective date. For changes that matter, we'll email account holders at least 30 days before they apply. If you keep using CageCard after that, you accept the new terms; if you don't agree, you can cancel before then.

12. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes go to the state or federal courts in Massachusetts, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring them there instead. Please contact us first: most problems can be sorted out by email.

13. Everything else

These terms, the privacy policy and any order or agreement we sign with you are the whole agreement between us. If a part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term isn't giving it up. You can't transfer this agreement without our consent; we may transfer it if CageCard is sold or reorganised, and we'll tell you.
